WHO TOOK THE SPIRIT OUT OF CHRISTMAS?
SANTA OR SATAN?
Have you ever attended a birthday party where everyone except the individual celebrating his/her birth received a gift? Let’s say you “grit your teeth” and decide to go ahead and attend your birthday celebration and discover not only will you be receiving any gifts, but the entire celebration would be based upon myths, deception, and commercialism? There are really only two aspects of Christmas, the spiritual, and the commercial. According to Scripture, Jesus is the reason for the season. He was/is the gift of God. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3:16)
Facts or Fiction…
Where there actually three wise men who visited Jesus as a newborn infant bearing gifts while in the manger? Not according to Scripture. “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.”(Matthew 2:1) Notice there is no mention of how many wise men came. Continue; Saying, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2) This verse clearly describes that what the wise men had actually seen was the star in the east. Remember, they were traveling from the east to see Jesus. You simply cannot be in the east going to the east. “Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.”(Matthew 2:7-8) Again, the Bible records no mention of the number of wise men. In fact, King Herod already knew they had not actually seen the baby Jesus, because he specifically asked them the question; what time the star appeared. Wouldn’t the logical question be inquiring about the newborn infant Jesus? Then they were ordered to go and search diligently for the young child. Why search for someone that you have already found?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WHO?
At first glance, you may ask what difference does it make; but it is very important because if the birth of Christ cannot be established by the church-based upon Scripture, then we leave all of the entire text up for questioning. The fact is tradition teaches us that three wise men went to see a babe who was lying in a manger bringing gifts. “And when they came into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.”(Matthew 2:11). This verse tells the reader, they did not come to a manger, but they came into a house when they first actually saw Jesus; and clearly he was no infant by then because the Bible describes him as a young child. In conclusion, I submit the three gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh are the primary reason tradition has determined there were three wise men.
