How To Approach The Throne Of God, Speaking To Your Father…

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name”(Psalm 100:4).

The book of Psalms holds ancient Israel’s favorite hymns and prayers. These hymns and prayers were used in their worship of God, the Great King. Most theologians believe various authors wrote it. Notable names include David, Asaph, the Sons of Korah, Solomon, Heman, Ethan, and Moses. There are also contributions from unknown authors. The period of authorship starts with the time of Moses, which was probably about 1440 BC. It continues to the time after the Babylonian exile, after 538 BC. Our title Scripture emphasizes three significant characteristics that should be acknowledged while in His holy presence. They are thanksgiving, praise, and blessing His name. Spiritual Observation: Notice how each of these attributes require speaking with your mouth.

“For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named”(Ephesians 3:13-15).

There is an innate spiritual power in our positive confessions of faith given to the righteousness of God. “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”(James 5:16). This is talking about our spiritual prayer life. When we approach His throne, we should always consider the reality that we are speaking with our father. From a personal perspective, I think about my earthly father, whom I adored. I believe he was the most humble man I have ever known with his father; (My Grandfather), being the only exception. As his son, I always felt confident that I could go to him with all of my problems, and concerns knowing he would with loving kindness, and wisdom address my issues.  This means, you are identified and accepted as a family member of our Heavenly Father. You have all rights and privileges to go to him speaking boldly my prayers and petitions. Approach with humility, Godly fear, and reverence. “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named”(Ephesians 3:14-15). Here is another point of entry. In our devout worship and reverence, we are instructed that we should “bow our knees” in His presence. Also, we should see this passage as identifying us as members of the Heavenly Father’s family. We are named in heaven and on earth.

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him”(.John 4:23).

This passage is undoubtedly speaking to the contemporary church of today. The hour is now! Our Heavenly Father has recorded the existence of man from the very beginning in the OT. He said we were made in His image. He has documented man’s relationship with the Father and His covenant with man. God commanded inherited stewardship and responsibilities and assigned them to man. The Bible is consistent from the Old Testament to the New Testament. It shows that everything was created only after God first spoke it into existence. For instance, every time He created, The words “And God said” was first stated. “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples”(John 15:7-8). This passage comes with a condition. The condition is if we are to become good fruit bearer’s, we must understand the word of God. Our father has provided us in the contemporary church with the living word, the Bible.

  1. I loved the way you explained how we should approach God’s throne. Prayer etiquette is very important, as it not only honors the Creator, it humbles us. These knees have gotten a bit battle worn, however, I thank you, Brother Jefferson, for the reminder. I will start back to “bowing-down” when I pray, when my arthritis permits, of course (lol).

    Thanks again.

    1. Bro. Eric:
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. Two things come to mind as I respond, first since the post is obviously addressing the way we as Saints should pray to our Heavenly Father; I cite the first Scripture reference from the Psalm writer, who states we should enter in or begin our prayers, and petititions with thanksgiving and praise. I interpret this to mean instead of the way we would commonly come asking our Father for something; we should first thank Him. and immediately following is to give Him his well deserved praise. Scripture records “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6). My second thought is in response to your “battle worn knees”. I wanted to express how the emphasis should not be based on merely our physical ability to bow down, (although I believe we should if we can) but if we consider the aforementioned prayer referenced, it clearly states “in all our ways” how we should approach His throne in prayer and worship. Additionally, in regard to those knees I will go to the throne on your behalf for healing.. “As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were” (Romans 4:16). In summary, as believers, we have been given divine power from on high in your positive confessions of faith. In your testimony, you are confessing and affirming that you have battle worn knees, therefore that is what you have; instead of declaring in your confession your healed knees through faith, and God’s grace which is sufficient. Again, I thank you for sharing your comments!

  2. Very well stated Bro. Jefferson. I appreciate your prayers. Iron sharpens iron.
